What Is the NMC CBT?
The computer-based test (CBT) is Part 1 of the NMC Test of Competence. It assesses knowledge needed for safe professional practice. The CBT is taken through Pearson Professional Assessments test centres.

That is 115 questions in three hours for nursing and midwifery candidates. You receive a separate result for each part.

Who Needs the NMC CBT?
The NMC may require a Test of Competence when an applicant seeks UK registration with a qualification obtained overseas, or returns to the register after a period away from practice.
This can include applicants for:
- Adult, mental health, learning disabilities or children’s nursing
- Midwifery
- Nursing associate registration
- Readmission to the register through the Test of Competence route
The test you take must match your field and application. CBT and OSCE can be taken in either order; both must be completed where the NMC requires the Test of Competence.

NMC CBT Mock Tests: Exam Format
Timing tip: Allow around 2 minutes per question in Part A and 90 seconds per question in Part B. Practise under timed conditions and read each question carefully.
