The Nursing and Midwifery Council will now push forward with a further review of its education standards, which includes the possibility of doubling the number of simulated learning hours that can be counted towards clinical practice hours on nursing programmes.
As part of this work, it has also made a commitment to research and explore requirements set out by other countries in relation to clinical placements, including the use of fewer practice learning hours. The move comes as a result of Brexit which means the UK is no longer bound by EU law on requirements for nursing and midwifery education programmes.
The NMC had put together a list of potential changes it would like to consider, but some stakeholders felt some of these areas could have been more “radical”.
Under the proposals, the NMC wants to consider doubling the number of hours nursing students can undertake in simulated learning which would count towards their required 2,300 placement hours – up from 300 to 600.
